Charles Armijo Woodruff

Charles Armijo Woodruff ( born January 12, 1884 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, † November 23, 1945 in New York City ) was an American naval officer. In the years 1914 and 1915 he was military governor of American Samoa.

Career

Charles Woodruff attended from 1902 the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis (Maryland) and then served as an officer in the United States Navy. On his departure, he had reached the rank of Commander, which roughly corresponds to a lieutenant colonel in the army. In 1906 he served on the battleship USS Pampanga. Between December 6, 1914, and March 1, 1915, he was the successor of Nathan Post Governor of American Samoa. Then he handed over this office to John Martin Poyer.

After the end of his time in the Navy Charles Woodruff served in the U.S. Merchant Marine. On November 23, 1945, he hanged himself in a New York hotel room on the curtain rod. This must be done well in a state of mental confusion. He stated (probably in a farewell letter ) to have missed his ship and therefore can not make any more money.
