Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve

Charles -Augustin Sainte -Beuve ( born December 23, 1804 in Boulogne -sur -Mer, France, † October 13th 1869 in Paris) was a French literary critic and writer.

Life

He received his education in Boulogne -sur -Mer and the Paris Lycée Charlemagne and then studied medicine at the University of Liège. He was an early age because of his poetic inclinations member of the crowds that cluster around Victor Hugo romantic literature circle " Cenakels ". Sainte- Beuve's literary ascent began with Tableau historique et critique de la poésie française et du théâtre français au XVIe siècle of 1828, a historical- critical work in the style of F. Walter Scott. In the following years he wrote poetry books under a pseudonym ( Poésies, Consolations and Pensées d' août ). "Dark, vague longing, overflowing sensation and an excess of Selbstzergliederung " ( Meyers encyclopedia ) make his protagonists to a kindred spirit of "Werther".

After the July Revolution, he let himself be carried away for a while from Saint- Simonism; he wrote for the Paris papers "Globe" and "National" and wrote Volupté ( 1834), a novel. Only with the job in the " Revue des Deux Mondes ," he was able to continue his early literary works and fully develop his talents. Honoré de Balzac, the passionate narrator 's own experiences, has him perdues in Les illusions ( German: Lost Illusions ) of 1839 in the figure of the talented - as unscrupulous upstart Lucien Chardon set a questionable monument.

1840 was Sainte-Beuve the post of curator at the library Mazarin; In 1845 he was appointed a member of the Académie française. After the coup of Napoleon III. Sainte-Beuve was professor of Latin poetry at the Collège de France, but his lectures led to unrest among the majority of republican -minded student body, so that he was playing prohibition soon. As well as teaching at the École Normale Supérieure ( 1857-61 ) came to an abrupt end, he retired into private life. Napoleon III. rewarded his services in 1865 by an appointment to the Senate.
