Charles B. Cory

Charles Barney Cory ( born January 31, 1857 in Boston, † July 31, 1921 in Chicago) was an American ornithologist.

Biography

At 16, Cory developed a keen interest in ornithology and began with the collection of skins. With the wealth of his father, he had the opportunity to travel widely to do and gather as one of the largest collections of birds from the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Cory attended Harvard University and the Boston University School of Law, but after a short time he continued his travel. In 1883 he was one of 84 ornithologists, who participated in the founding of the American Ornithologists ' Union. As Cory's collection of over 19,000 skins was too big, he donated the entire collection to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. Cory took over the post of curator of the bird department. 1906 Cory lost his private property and therefore could no longer continue his work in the Department of Ornithology. After the resignation of Daniel Giraud Elliot zoologists as curator of the Department of Zoology, Field Museum of Natural History Cory Elliot was successor.

Cory wrote many books on the birds of the Caribbean, including The Birds of Haiti and Santo Domingo ( 1885), The Birds of the West Indies (1889 ) and The Birds of Illinois and Wisconsin ( 1909). His last major work was the four-volume Catalague of the Birds of the Americas, which was completed after his death by Carl Eduard Hellmayr.

In the Anglo- American world of the Cory's shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ) bears the name of Cory's Shearwater. Although he was already described in 1769 by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, but only recognized by Charles Barney Cory as an independent species.
