Charles C. Steidel

Charles Colville Steidel ( born October 14, 1962 in Ithaca ( New York)) is an American astronomer.

Steidel studied at Princeton University and received his PhD in Astronomy in 1990 at the California Institute of Technology. He is a professor of astronomy.

The work of Steidel and colleagues brought a breakthrough in the observation of normal galaxies in the early universe, the discovery and investigation of many Lyman -break galaxies and similar galaxies. Previously mainly extreme objects such as quasars and radio galaxies had been known in this era.
