Charles C. Stevenson

Charles Clark Stevenson ( born February 20, 1826 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York, † September 21, 1890 in Carson City, Nevada ) was an American politician and from 1887 to 1890 governor of Nevada.

Early years and political rise

Charles Stevenson attended the public schools in Canada and Michigan. In 1859 he went to Nevada and worked as miners, millers and in agriculture. As an elected member of the Storey County he sat for three parliamentary terms in the Senate from Nevada and was subsequently elected as Rector of the University of Nevada. A post he held for eleven years. In the years 1872 and 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant. In 1885 he was chairman of the Nevada Silver Convention. Already in 1876 he had represented his country at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

Governor of Nevada

In 1886 he was elected as a member of the Republican Governor of Nevada. Stevenson took up his new post on January 3, 1887, and practiced there until his death on 21 September 1890. During this time, Stewart Indian School was founded, the University of Nevada reformed, the railway further promoted and developed programs to support the ranchers and farmers. Charles Stevenson was buried in the cemetery Mountain View, Oakland. He was married twice and had a total of two children.
