Charles C. Van Zandt

Charles Collins Van Zandt ( born August 10, 1830 in Newport, Rhode Iceland, † June 4, 1894 ) was an American politician and 1877-1880 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years

Charles Van Zandt attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. After studying law and his 1853 was admitted to the bar he began in Newport to work in his new profession. Two years later he became a lawyer of this city and court reporters in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In 1857, he was himself elected to this body, and a year later he was president of the house.

Political Rise and Governor of Rhode Iceland

Van Zandt was a member of the Republican Party. From 1869 to 1870 he was a member of the State Senate. From 1873 to 1875 he served as Deputy Governor Deputy Governor Henry Howard. In 1877 he was elected as a candidate of his party and the Prohibition movement for governor of his state. After he was confirmed in the following two years each in his office, he could reign as governor from 29 May 1877 to 25 May 1880. During this time, he promoted the expansion of the school system in his state. Van Zandt was known also as a good writer and speaker.

After the end of his governorship to him by President Rutherford B. Hayes the place of the American ambassador to Russia was offered, but he refused. Charles Van Zandt died in June 1894. He was married to Arazelia Greene Porter.
