In January 1633 Charles fled from his castle in Haigerloch before the riots of the Thirty Years' War, with an entourage of 21 people to the Hohenzollern Castle, which was soon filled out by the Swedes. Count Karl were given free trigger and he went to the imperial camp to Überlingen to seek in vain for aid to the relief of the castle. He died on March 9, 1634 at the local Gasthaus zur Krone.

As he was left without heirs, went out with him the line of Hohenzollern - Haigerloch. According to the stipulations of the Erbvereinigung of 1575 his country fell to Prince Johann of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen.
