Charles County, Maryland

The Charles County is a county located in the state of Maryland in the United States. In the census in 2010, the County had 146 551 inhabitants and a population density of 122.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is La Plata.

The Charles County is part of the metropolitan area around the U.S. capital Washington.

Geography

The County is bordered on the west by Virginia and has an area of 1,666 square kilometers; of which 472 square miles ( 28.33 percent) of water. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Charles County was formed in 1658. It was named for Charles Calvert (1637-1715), 3rd Baron Baltimore, who was from 1661 to 1676 and from 1679 to 1684 Governor of Maryland.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000, lived in Cecil County 120 546 people in 41,668 households and 32,292 families. The population density was 262 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.5 percent white, 26.1 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 1.8 percent Asian and 0.7 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.3 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 41,668 households out of which 41.1 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 14.5 percent were single mothers and 22.5 percent were non-families. 17.2 percent of all households were single-person households and 5.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size is 3.21 people.

28.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 to 24, 33.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 7.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.

The average income of a household was $ 62,199, for a family is $ 67,602. Males had a median income of $ 43,371, women $ 34,231. The per capita income was $ 24,285. Approximately 3.7 percent of families and 5.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
