Charles Cros

Charles Cros ( born October 1, 1842 in Fabrezan, Aude department; † August 9, 1888 in Paris) was a French poet and inventor.

Life

Charles Cros was a respected poet and humorous writer. In 1871 he founded the poet circle Cercle des poètes Zutiques. In the technical field, he developed several improved methods in photography, including an early method of color photography. He also developed several improvements in the field of telegraphy.

He is best known that he was about to invent the first device to record sound. In April 1877 he submitted to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Paris a paper in which he reported that the vibrations of sound waves can be measured by a pin fixed on a vibrating membrane. He further reported that you could engrave with this finding, the vibrations in metal, so a needle attached to a membrane then run over the engraved vibrations and could reproduce the sounds. He named his so designed device Paléophone. Before Cros was able to dig deeper into this idea or even build a model, Thomas Alva Edison developed the first working phonograph.

Charles Cros died at the age of only 45 years in Paris. The Académie Charles Cros in Paris is named after him.
