Charles D. Gemar

Charles Donald "Sam" Gemar (* August 4, 1955 in Yankton, South Dakota, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Gemar received in 1979 a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Military Academy.

1973 Gemar joined the Army, where he received his pilot's license in 1980.

Astronauts activity

In June 1985, Gemar was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate.

STS -38

Gemar was launched on 15 November 1990 as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on its first flight into space. On behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense has been exposed as the payload of a military spy satellite.

STS -48

On 12 September 1991 Gemar began as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery into space. In this five- day mission, the UARS satellite was exposed to research the upper atmosphere. The 6.5 -tonne satellite led by one of the most detailed studies of the Earth's atmosphere, including the ozone layer.

STS -62

On 4 March 1994 Gemar began as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia for his third space flight. Payload were the United States Microgravity Payload 2 ( USMP ) and Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology 2 ( ODST ). These payloads the effects of weightlessness could be explored.
