Charles David Allis

Charles David Allis ( born March 22, 1951 in Cincinnati, Ohio) is an American biologist and professor at the Rockefeller University in New York City.

Life

Allis earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1973 from the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1975, he received a master's degree in biology from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1978 and a Ph.D. just there. Allis worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. A first Junior Professorship (1981 Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in 1986 ) he had just there a full professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, from 1988 Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1989. In 1990, Allis as a professor of biology at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, before 1995, the same function at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, took over. In 1997 and 1998 he was also professor of oncology at the University's School of Medicine. Between 1998 and 2003 Allis was at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, a professor of microbiology and professor of biochemistry and molecular genetics. Since 2003 he is Professor of chromatin biology and epigenetics and head of the Laboratory of the same name at the Rockefeller University in New York City.

Work

Allis ' research involves the chromatin, the complex of deoxyribonucleic acid and proteins, in which the genetic information is tightly packed in the nucleus. Chromatin plays a decisive role in gene expression, in which it releases certain portions of the genome for further steps of the transcription or not. Allis ' work deals with the processes and chemical changes that determine the chromatin structure and function. One possible application is the attempt to turn on genes which inhibit tumor growth, and turn off those which stimulate tumor growth. Research are based on various mechanisms of histone modification and the histone code.
