Charles De Coster

Charles Théodore Henri De Coster ( born August 20, 1827 in Munich, † May 7, 1879 in Ixelles ) was a Belgian writer. His Ulenspiegel, the epic of the struggle for freedom of the Flemish against the Spanish oppression, founded modern French-language literature in Belgium.

Life

De Coster was born the son of an official of the papal nuncio in Munich. He studied law and literature in Brussels where he taught himself later literature.

At times, he worked as a bank clerk, was employed by the Belgian State Archives and drew as editor of the magazine Uylenspiegel. For a short time he was a lecturer at the Military School in Brussels.

From 1855 on, he established himself as a journalist and freelance writer. With its folk tales he had great success. After almost ten years of intensive work, for which he gave up his position at the Belgian State Archives, succeeded De Coster, the great Flemish painters to face with his transfer of Adventure Till Eulenspiegel in time to the Eighty Years' War a equal rank literary work. The book was initially but no commercial success. Following the initial report in 1867 an illustrated edition was in 1869. Was only after the death of De Coster, the book was reissued in 1893 and gained greater popularity.

De Coster had gone into debt while working on the book and died in poverty.
