Charles Dougherty (Florida politician)

Charles Dougherty (* October 15, 1850 in Athens, Georgia, † October 11, 1915 in Daytona Beach, Florida ) was an American politician. Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Dougherty attended the common schools and then studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He then went as a sailor at sea. In 1871, he settled near Port Orange, Florida, where he worked as a planter. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1877 and 1885 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Florida, which he was president in 1879.

In the congressional elections of 1884 Dougherty was in the second electoral district of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of the Republican Horatio Bisbee on March 4, 1885. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1889 two legislative sessions. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Dougherty resumed his previous occupation as a planter on again. Between 1891 and 1912 he was several times delegate in the House of Representatives from Florida. From 1895 to 1898, he also belonged to the State Senate. He died on October 11, 1915 in Daytona Beach.
