Charles Dumas

Charles Everett Dumas ( born February 12, 1937 in Tulsa, † January 5, 2004 in Inglewood ) was an American high jumper.

In qualifying for the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, he jumped on June 29, 1956 as the first man over 7 ft ( = 2.1336 m). With this amount he traveled as a favorite to Australia and was able to win the Olympic gold medal in the high jump there also with a new Olympic record ( 2.12 m ).

Four years later, at the Games in Rome he finished, hampered by a knee injury, the 6th Place.

Dumes died aged 66 from cancer.
