Charles Durning

Charles Durning ( born February 28, 1923 in Highland Falls, New York, † December 24, 2012 in New York City ) was an American actor. The heavyweight Mime counted since the 1970s to the most prominent supporting actors in Hollywood. One of his most famous roles he played in 1982 as " Tootsie " romantic admirer.

Life

As a 21-year United States Army Ranger was Durning, the son of an Army officer who participated as a soldier in World War II in the invasion on D-Day at Omaha Beach beach section. Durning survived in December 1944 as one of the few the Malmedy massacre. He received several military awards, including the Silver Star, and the Purple Heart three times.

After the war, Charles Durning his money earned first as metal workers, elevator operator, taxi drivers and waiters. After a spectacle -related studies at New York University, he was mainly employed as a dancer in various dance palaces. After that, his theater career began mainly with Shakespearean roles.

The film established the gray-haired, heavy-weight actors in Hollywood as a distinctive character actor who was regularly seen, especially in the 1970s and 1980s in profiled supporting roles.

Twice he was in the category " Best Supporting Actor " nominated for an Oscar in 1982 as a singing politician in Colin Higgins ' The most beautiful House of Pleasure in Texas and in 1983 for his role as "Colonel Ehrhardt " in the Mel Brooks remake of To Be or Not. One his most famous roles played Durning in 1982 as a romantic admirer of Tootsie Dustin Hoffman.

Since 1975, Durning was nominated for nine Emmy Award; including in 2005 for his guest role as Ernie Yost in the episode The hero of Iwo Jima ( in the original: Call of Silence ) the CBS television series NCIS and most recently in 2008 for his 24 guest-starred as John Gavin Sr. in the television series Rescue Me (2004-2007 ).

Durning was honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 31 July 2008 with a star in the film category; his star is located at 6504 Hollywood Boulevard next to his childhood idol, James Cagney. He died on 24 December 2012 at the age of 89 years. His grave is located on the Arlington National Cemetery.
