Charles Erskine (cardinal)

Charles Erskine Earl of Kellie ( born February 13, 1739 Rome, † March 20, 1811 in Paris ) was an Italian- Scottish Cardinal.

One originating from Scotland family belonging, his father Colin Earl of Kellie and Mar and his mother the Noble Agatha Gigli from Anagni. After visiting the Scottish College in Rome Erskine attended from 1748 to 1753, also based in Rome Sapienza university where the doctorate he made in state law in 1770.

Worked first as a layman at the Curia, Pope Pius VI appointed him. 1782 to the Pontifical House prelates, canons of the Vatican Basilica, papal Pro- Auditor and promoter of the CDF. Already in 1783 he was promoted to dean of the Konsistorialanwälte. After receiving the Subdiakonatsweihe on August 28, 1783, the Pope sent him in October 1793 as legate to England, where he had excellent connections to the royal court and the various ministries. Here he worked as an auditor of the pope and should facilitate the difficult situation of the English Catholics. On February 23, 1801 by Pope Pius VII appointed cardinal in pectore, Erskine returned later that year to Rome. After his name had been published as a cardinal on 17 January 1803 he was awarded on 20 January 1803, the red biretta and on 28 March 1803, the titular church of S. Maria in Campitelli assigned as a cardinal deacon. After receiving the diaconate on 22 January 1804 he was appointed protector of Scotland and on September 14, 1808 to Propräfekten the Congregation for the papal briefs. When the French occupied the city of Rome, located Erskine was with the Pope in the Quirinal Palace under house arrest. Although he was of poor health, Napoleon ordered him in 1809 to Paris, where he departed from Rome on January 2, 1810. Here he was indeed witnessed the civil marriage of the emperor, but was not living at the church wedding the following day.

His grave is now in the church of Sainte -Geneviève in Paris, now the Pantheon.
