Charles Floquet

Charles Thomas Floquet ( born October 2, 1828 in Saint -Jean -Pied -de-Port, † January 18, 1896 in Paris) was a French statesman and Prime Minister.

After studying law, he worked as a lawyer. As an opponent of the Second Empire he was in 1871 elected as a Republican to the National Assembly. After he resigned from the parliamentary seat in April 1871, he mediated between the government and the Paris Commune. He was in 1876 elected to the Chamber of Deputies and was from 1885 to 1888 and from 1889 to 1893 its president.

In between, he was Prime Minister of the French Third Republic. As such, he was in opposition to Georges Boulanger and his " Boulangism Movement". In 1888 it came to a duel between Floquet and Boulanger, wounded in the Floquet Boulanger.

Floquets political influence waned after the Panama scandal of 1893. Nevertheless, he was from 1894 until his death, Senator.
