Charles G. Oakman

Charles Gibb Oakman ( born September 4, 1903 in Detroit, Michigan, † October 28, 1973 in Dearborn, Michigan ) was an American politician. Between 1953 and 1955 he represented the state of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Oakman attended the public schools of his home and then the Wayne State University. Subsequently, he studied until 1926 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Between 1927 and 1940 he worked in the real estate industry and in the transportation business. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1941 and 1952 Oakman was sitting in the County Council of Wayne County. In the years 1941 and 1942 he was employed as Executive Secretary to the staff of Edward Jeffries, the mayor of Detroit. Between 1942 to 1945 he was city auditor ( City controller) and from 1947 to 1952 a member of the City Council of Detroit. He also worked in the years 1948 to 1954 for the Detroit - Wayne Joint Building Authority. From 1955 to 1973 he was General Manager of that authority.

In the congressional elections of 1952 Oakman was in the 17th electoral district of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the exchanged in the 18th District George Anthony Dondero on January 3, 1953. Since he is the Democrat Martha Griffiths defeated in 1954, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1955.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Oakman worked as General Manager for the Detroit - Wayne Joint Building Authority. He died on October 28, 1973 in Dearborn.
