Charles Gilbert Heathcote

Charles Gilbert Heathcote ( born March 2, 1841 Conington Castle, Huntingdonshire, † November 15, 1913 in Kilmeston, Hampshire ) was an English jurist, tennis player and amateur painter.

Life

Heathcote was born in 1841 at Conington Castle, the son of John Heathcote Huntingdon and his third wife Emily Colbourne. He studied at the College of Eton and Cambridge. From 1867 he worked as a barrister.

In 1868 he was one of the founders of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and was involved in the development of the modern rules of tennis during the first Wimbledon tournament. Charles took from 1877 to 1880 to the first Wimbledon Championships in part. He achieved his best result in 1877, when he joined the eventual winner Spencer Gore was defeated in the semifinals. In 1869 he married Lucy Edith Wrottesley.

Heathcote died in 1913 at the Manor House Kilmeston in Kilmeston.
