Charles Henderson (Alabama politician)

Charles Henderson ( born April 26, 1860, Pike County, Alabama; † January 7, 1937 in Troy, Alabama ) was an American politician (Democratic Party) and the Governor of Alabama.

Early years and political rise

He went to the schools in Troy and then on the Howard College in Marion, but he left this when his father died. Henderson was a respected business man who had a lot to do in the civil, political, or business environment. Some of these positions were: Inspector General of Governor Samford's staff, aide to Governor Jelks rod, 13 years mayor of Troy, as well as director of the Standard Chemical and Oil Co., the Farmers and Merchants National Bank in Troy, and Troy Compress Company. Henderson was elected in 1906 as President of the Alabama Railroad Commission in 1908 and was re-elected until 1912 worked in this office. He was also one of the founders and managers of the Troy State Normal College.

Governor of Alabama

On 3 November 1914 he was elected governor of Alabama and sworn in on 18 January 1915. During his tenure, the parliament passed a tax law revision, a code law and a prohibition law, which Alabama held dry 1915-1933. The State Child Welfare Department was formed, the State Board of Purchase founded, as well as a Workmen's Compensation Measure features. Furthermore, the state prison system has been improved, accepted educational reforms and the Insurance Department in 1916 established what became one of the economically most prosperous financial authorities of the government. Furthermore, Henderson helped to mobilize during the First World War Alabama's resources for the war effort.

He left on January 20, 1919 from his position and returned to his business ventures in Troy. Henderson passed away on January 7, 1937 and was buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy. He was married to Laura Montgomery.
