Charles Henderson (Nevada politician)

Charles Belknap Henderson ( born June 8, 1873 in San Jose, California, † November 8, 1954 in San Francisco ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, representing the state of Nevada in the U.S. Senate.

Early years

Charles Henderson was still a boy when he moved with his parents in 1876 to Nevada, where he attended the public schools in Elko. He then studied at the University of the Pacific in Stockton and Stanford University. He made in 1895 at the University of Michigan his law degree; the following year he was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Elko. In 1898 he fought in the Spanish-American War and was a member of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, known as the Rough Riders.

In 1901, Henderson took over the office of the District Attorney in Elko County and kept this until 1905, when he received a parliamentary seat in the Nevada Assembly. This he held until 1907. After that he belonged until 1917 to the governing body of the University of Nevada in Reno.

Senator

On January 12, 1918 appointed U.S. Senator Charles Henderson of Nevada Governor Emmet D. Boyle. He stepped in Washington D.C. to succeed the late Francis G. Newlands and also won the by-election to this seat in 1920, he applied for re-election, but was defeated by former Republican Governor Tasker Oddie and thus had on March 3, 1921 the Senate retire.

From the year 1934, Henderson Member of the Board of Directors of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, an independent federal agency. In 1941 he took over the chairmanship; six years later he resigned this office and retired from politics. He became president of the Elko Telephone & Telegraph Co. and director of the Western Pacific Railroad.

Charles Henderson died in 1954 in San Francisco. The city of Henderson in Nevada carries his name as a tribute.
