Charles Hudson (climber)

Charles Hudson ( * 1828July 14, 1865 by crash on Hörnligrat, Matterhorn ) was an Anglican clergyman and mountaineer from Skillington in Lincolnshire ( Midlands ).

Hudson was one of the greatest climbers in the Golden Age of Alpinism, and is considered a pioneer of winter mountaineering and leaderless mountaineering in the western Alps. His first ascents include the Dufour (4634 m) and Mont Blanc du Tacul ( 4248 m).

He also belonged to the group of the first ascent of the Matterhorn, which reached the summit on 14 July 1865. He had initially planned to climb with his friends Kennedy, Birkbeck and M'Cormick. But they were not, for various reasons on the day of departure in Zermatt. This Hadow his student was given the opportunity to participate in the seven -man expedition. On the descent came Charles Hudson and Robert Hadow, Michel Croz and the mountain guide and Lord Francis Douglas died. He is buried under the altar of English church in Zermatt.
