Charles Humphrey Atherton

Charles Humphrey Atherton ( born August 14, 1773 in Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire; † January 8, 1853 ) was an American politician. Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the State of New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Atherton attended the public schools of his home and thereafter until 1794, the Harvard University. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1797 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Amherst. Between 1798 and 1807, he was registrar at a probate court. Politically, Atherton member of the Federalist Party.

In the congressional elections of 1814, which were held all across the state, he was for the second parliamentary seat from New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he met on March 4, 1815 the successor of Samuel Smith. Since he resigned in 1816 to further candidacy, Atherton was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1817.

Between 1823 and 1839 Atherton was a deputy in the House of Representatives from New Hampshire. He also worked as a lawyer again. He died on January 8, 1853 in his native Amherst. Charles Atherton was the father of Charles G. Atherton (1804-1853), who sat 1843-1853 twice in the U.S. Senate for the state of New Hampshire. The son was also from 1837 to 1843 also Congressman for New Hampshire.
