Charles IV, Duke of Anjou

Charles V of Maine ( * 1436, † 1481 in Marseille), since 1472 was a Count of Maine, Mortain, Gien and Guise from the recent House of Anjou. He was the son of Charles IV, Count of Maine, and his wife Cobella Ruffo.

1474 he married his cousin Joan of Lorraine (* 1458, † 1480), daughter of Count Frederick II of Vaudémont and Jolande of Anjou, a daughter of his uncle René I of Anjou. The marriage remained childless.

When René died in 1480, Charles inherited from him the duchy of Anjou (as Charles IV ) and the counties of Provence and Forcalquier, but not the Duchy of Lorraine, René himself had possessed only because of his marriage and to Rene's grandson through the female line, René II went. The claims of his uncle to the Kingdom of Naples, the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of Jerusalem took Charles on the other hand.

Karl died but a year later. He left the Provence and the claim to Naples, etc. to the French king, Louis XI. , Anjou and Maine were completed as appanage back to the crown. The county of Guise went to his nephew, Louis of Armagnac, the son of his half-sister Louise of Anjou ( 1445-1477 ).
