Charles Knight (publisher)
Charles Knight ( born March 15, 1791 in Windsor ( Berkshire ), † March 9, 1873 in Addlestone, Surrey ) was an English publisher and writer.
Knight was a bookseller in London and since 1859 editor of the official " London Gazette ," he made himself particularly as editor of the Company for the carriage -profit knowledge ( Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge ) undertaken publications deserve, especially the Penny Cyclopaedia (1830 - 1856, 30 vols ), the Penny Magazine ( 1832 to 1845 ), which are to be regarded as the beginnings of popular literature in England, and the National Cyclopaedia ( 1847-1851, 12 vols ).
As a writer himself Knight employed preferably with Shakespeare. This subheading, except an edition of his works with very full commentary (1839, 8 vols ): The life of Shakespeare ( 1843) and Studies of Shakespeare ( 1849). Was translated into German his book The results of machinery, namely with regard to inexpensive production and increased employment ( Lubeck, 1833).
