Charles-Marie-Esprit Espinasse

Esprit Espinasse Charles Marie ( born April 2, 1815 in Saissac, Aude, † June 4, 1859 ) was a French general.

Espinasse received his military education at the Military School of Saint- Cyr and entered 1837 as a lieutenant in the French Foreign Legion in Algiers. In 1845 he distinguished himself as head of a battalion in the campaign against the Kabyles and in 1851 promoted to colonel. As such, he blew up the coup d'état on 2 December 1851, the National Assembly and suppressed after several attempts at insurrection. For this he was in May 1852 Brigadier General and Adjutant of the Emperor Napoleon III. appointed.

In the Crimean War he commanded in August 1854, the unsuccessful expedition to the Dobrudja, was first recalled to France, but in 1855 sent to the Crimea. In the battle of the Alma, he commanded the 1st Brigade, under the later commander François Certain de Canrobert. He distinguished himself on 16 August 1855 in the Battle of the Chernaya, and was appointed on August 29 for the general of division.
