Charles Martin (Illinois)

Charles Martin (* May 20, 1856 in Ogdensburg, New York, † October 28, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician. In 1917, he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1860, Charles Martin came with his parents to Chicago, where he later attended the public schools. He then worked as a contractor for sewer work. Later he became a coal merchant. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1894 and 1915 he was several times in the city council of Chicago.

In the congressional elections of 1916, Martin in the fourth electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC was chosen, where he became the successor of James T. McDermott on March 4, 1917. This mandate he was able to exercise until his death on 28 October of the same year. In his time as a congressman was the American entry into the First World War in April 1917. Martin's deputies went to mandate a special election to John W. Rainey.
