Charles McGavin

Charles McGavin ( born January 10, 1874 in Riverton, Sangamon County, Illinois, † December 17, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1905 and 1909 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles McGavin attended the public schools in Springfield and the High School in Mount Olive. After a subsequent law degree in 1897 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started working in Springfield in this profession. In 1899 he moved his residence and his law firm to Chicago. Between 1903 and 1904 he was deputy city attorney there. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1904 McGavin was in the eighth election district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the late William F. Mahoney meantime on March 4, 1905. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1909 two legislative sessions. In 1908, he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Charles McGavin again worked as a lawyer in Chicago. Between 1912 and 1915 he lived in Los Angeles ( California ), where he also practiced law; then he returned to Chicago. In June 1920 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, was nominated at the Warren G. Harding as their presidential candidate. Charles McGavin died on 17 December 1940 in Chicago.
