Charles Monck, 4th Viscount Monck

Charles Stanley Monck, 4th Viscount Monck of Ballytrammon, 4th and 1st Baron Monck of Ballytrammon KCMG PC ( born October 10, 1819 in Templemore, County Tipperary, Ireland, † November 29, 1894 in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland) was a British colonial administrator and first Governor-General of Canada.

Life

In 1848 he ran for the Liberal Party unsuccessfully for a seat in the lower house (House of Commons ) in the constituency of Wicklow. After the death of his father in 1849 he inherited the title of Viscount Monck, as well as 4 4th Baron Monck in the Peerage of Ireland.

In 1852 he was elected as a member of the House of Commons and represented there until his election defeat in the general election in 1859 the constituency of Portsmouth. During this time he was 1855-1858 and Junior Lord of the Treasury during the tenure of Prime Minister Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston. After his election defeat in 1859, he decided to retire from active politics.

On October 25, 1861, he was appointed Governor of the Province of Canada, which existed at the time from Ontario and Quebec. He became known for his skill to avoid the British and Canadian involvement in the taking place 1861-1865 American Civil War. In addition, he was involved in a leading role in the preparation of the Canadian Confederation. For these merits raised him Queen Victoria as 1st Baron Monck in 1866 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He thus became a member of the British House of Lords.

With the official start of the Canadian Confederation on July 1, 1867 he became the first Governor-General of Canada and held this office until 14 November 1868.

He then returned to Ireland and received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Knighthood of St. Michael and St. George. In addition, he was appointed in 1869 in the Privy Council and thus into the Privy Council of Queen Victoria. He was most recently 1874-1892 Lord Lieutenant of County Dublin.
