In works such as Les Ruines de Paris and Figures parisiennes he presented the Paris of his time, and his lorgnette Littéraire (1857 ) is considered a unique example of the Parisian literary scene of the 19th century. He wrote novels and short stories, parodies and pastiches, poems, reviews and plays and was a major librettist.
