Charles Moore (architect)

Charles Willard Moore ( born October 31, 1925 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, † December 16, 1993 in Austin, Texas ) was an American architect. He was one of the "founding fathers" and theorists of postmodernism. Known as architect Moore was by the Sea Ranch in California.

Moore studied architecture and philosophy including Princeton University in Princeton (New Jersey). From 1962 to 1975 he was a professor at several universities, including the University of California at Berkeley. In 1970 he founded the office in Connecticut Charles W. Moore Associate, the 1975 parallel working groups, among others followed by William Grover and Robert Harper. 1991 Moore received the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects.

Besides a large number of single-family homes, Moore was able to realize early on some housing estates for vulnerable layers. This showed that cost Massenwohnungsbauten must be formless and not necessarily uniform.

MLTW

MLTW is an architectural firm, which was established in 1962 in Berkeley ( California). MLTW stands for Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, William Turnbull and Richard Whitaker. 1965 - 1970 he led this office under the MLTW / Moore - Turnbull in New Haven and San Francisco with William Turnbull on alone. In 1970 the company was dissolved.

Development / artistic position

As a young practitioner he resisted modernist constraints. Moore said: " This style ( modern) is not very useful, interesting, meaningful, rewarding expression of the present. "

Its architectural language consists of familiar characters and allusions to the (architectural ) history and location. He wanted to create the inhabitants of a place a personal connection to this and satisfy the original needs. Moore's architecture is playful and kitschy and pastoral. It is also often a certain irony in his works to be found. His buildings first appear cheap ( with some exceptions) - because they act bald and are designed on the facade little.

He used motifs of the Renaissance. Moore's opinion on the architecture should have a narrative quality, create the connection to the past and can open up fictions.

Moore has remained largely faithful to the semiotic, ironic attitude toward classicism. Charles Moore sees the creation of places the great task of architects and once said: "If architects are to continue to do useful work on this planet, then you have their real concern is the creation of " memorable " places to be [ ... ]. A place to create a field called create, which allows people to see where they are located and beyond who they are. "He considered explicitly Disneyland as an authentic expression of public consciousness.

The main feature of its construction is to be created with a relatively small investment confusing exciting rooms.
