Life and work

Nodier was illegitimate but legitimated son of an Ascended under the Revolution to the mayor of Besançon and the high Judge Advocate, who, however, came after 1794 the political sidelines. Nodier received a good education and was engaged in his hometown early politically, but on the side of anti-revolutionary. He was conspicuous in 1799 police when he wrote a pro- royalist piece. In 1804 he came because of a satirical poem against Napoleon briefly in jail. In 1805 he took part even in a conspiracy against the newly proclaimed emperor and crowned dictator. However, he had each lucky enough to be preserved by influential friends of his father before tougher penalties and to somewhere far away and submerge wait of Besançon.

After all, he drove in these turbulent years intensive insektenkundliche, linguistic and literary studies, schriftstellerte and also married (1808 ). In 1812 he was appointed despite his past as opposition to the imperial librarian of the newly annexed French province of Illyria and spent a year in Ljubljana (Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia today ) - a stay during his formative years.

After the rapid loss of the province of Illyria 1813 Nodier settled in Paris, where he had been hitherto only visited as and where he was now trying to live by his pen. Because as a writer he had long no stranger: he had, for example, 1803 short novel Le Peintre de Bourg salt, journal of émotions d'un cœur Souffrant and 1804 the volume of poetry Essais d'un jeune bard published. With the essay Les Tristes ou Mélanges Tires of tablettes d'un suicide, he wrote in 1806 one of the first treatises on suicide. 1808 and 1810, he had come out with two linguistic writings. And he had operated early and regularly in magazines as a literary critic (who also looked to England and Germany ). From 1814 he was also active as a political journalist, where he finally was able to use on the right side for him, ie for the cause of ancestral French monarchy.

His breakthrough as narrator scored Nodier 1818 who played in Slovenia robbers Roman Jean Sbogar, the tragic ending story of a socially committed, noble bandits. Although he wrote four more novels hereafter, but combines his name in the history of literature, especially with the numerous short stories, which he wrote in the 1820s and 1830s, including many horror novels by British and German models (eg Smarra ou les Démons de la nuit, 1821; Trilby, 1822 La Fée aux miettes, 1832), with which he introduced the "black romance " of ghosts and horror stories in France.

After his appointment as director of the Paris Bibliothèque de l' Arsenal ( 1824) entertained Nodier in his official residence a literary salon, which was the most important gathering of the first generation romantics, ie the slightly younger authors to Victor Hugo. Their early political swing from royalism to republicanism and liberalism, however, it did not take place with what his 1833 admission to the Académie française very relieved.

Although Nodier belongs only to the second row of the larger French authors, however, played an important role as co-founder of Romanticism in France.
