The Charles River is a relatively short river in Massachusetts, which separates the center of Boston, Cambridge and Charlestown.
It is fed by about 80 brooks, as well as some aquifers. It has its origin in the Echo Lake in Hopkinton and flows through 58 cities and villages of Eastern Massachusetts, before it joins the port of Boston. Overall, the Charles River about 129 km lays back. Its catchment area includes 33 lakes and ponds. Despite the length of the river and despite its relatively large catchment area of 798 square kilometers, its source lies just 42 km from its mouth. In addition, the source is located only 107 meters above sea level.
Naming
