Charles Sydney Smith

Charles Sydney Smith (born 26 January 1879 in Worsley Mesnes, † April 6, 1951 in Southport ) was a British water polo player and three -time Olympic champion.

He was for 24 years from 1902 to 1926 the keeper in the British water polo team and took their part in four Olympic Games. The British water polo player who dominated the sport in the early 20th century, the gold medal won at the Games in London in 1908, in Stockholm in 1912 and 1920 in Antwerp. His third gold medal won Smith at the age of 41 years and 270 days. He is the oldest water polo player who has ever been Olympic champion.

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 he took at the age of 45 years, again in part, but failed with the British team in the preliminary round to Hungary with 6:7.

He was inducted in 1981 into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale.
