Charles the Child

Charles the Child, Latin Karolus puer ( Annales Bertiniani ); ( * Ca 849, † September 29 866 on an estate near Buzançais in Aquitaine ) was the second son of Charles II and younger brother of Louis the Stammerer.

Karl was elected in October 855 of Aquitanian Great in Limoges for the ( sub) King of Aquitaine, anointed and crowned. With the establishment of no real powers over the lower Aquitanian Kingdom were connected, since neither instrument traditions ( such as in I. Pippin or Pepin II ) nor any other firm activities are detectable today. In addition, Pepin II of Aquitaine ruled in parts until 864, so that the power of Charles the child was challenged in his part Reich.

In addition, the political situation of Aquitaine placed in the 850 years is as one characterized by different interests landscape nobility who were trying to escape from the political sphere of influence of the West Frankish dynasty. The repeated invitations to the East Frankish royal house ( Louis the German ) illustrate here the contrasting attitude of the nobility against the monarchy, Charles II, the establishment of the young king's son in Aquitaine should therefore by the presence of a royal descendant of the de facto power loss of the royal family in the southwestern periphery of the West Frankish counteract Empire.

Karl married 862, 863 but the marriage was dissolved. From his wife is only known that she was the widow of Count Humbert. However, the marriage may have been partly responsible for that Karl fell out of favor with his father until 862 and 865 Aquitanian wish Big was reinstated. However, he died the following year, probably from epilepsy to have no descendants.
