Work

During his lifetime to Tournemire reputation was based mainly on his qualities as an outstanding organist and organ improviser. Today, he has remained primarily for his eight symphonies orchestra in mind, added his monumental work L' Orgue Mystique (op. 55-57 ). There is a cycle of compositions containing bound to the Catholic liturgy for each Sunday in Ordinary five pieces that are inspired by the equivalent Gregorian melody curves and must be interpreted with flexible tempi. Because of the tight binding to the liturgy they are barely played in concerts. Particularly noteworthy is the Choral Symphony, Op 69 is for organ, which is applied monothematic and has a very complex, partly polychord tonal language. This work, as well as the symphony sacrée evidence of the profound mystical Catholicism Tournemire.

The composer had a small house on the lonely, windswept West Coast French island of Ouessant, where he liked to stay up. There, under the influence of the raging of the elements, he was inspired to his visionary organ works. Happy to Tournemire held at the Abbey of Solesmes and the Cathedral of Amiens. From his contemporaries he was described as temperamental and unpredictable. All music that was not composed for the glory of God appeared to him senseless. Tournemire was also a famous improviser with extraordinary powers of invention, inspiration and visionary expression. The improvisation on Victimae paschali laudes that was recorded on LP, gives witness to his skills. To date, the organ works of Tournemire at least hardly brought into Germany to be heard.

In addition to his organ works are the Douze Poèmes - Prélude for piano, created as to mention Meditations on the Stations of the human life. In this cyclical business Tournemire skillfully explores the resonance of a concert grand. Tournemire also wrote operas and other orchestral works.

Known students Tournemire were Maurice Duruflé and Jean Langlais. Olivier Messiaen, already a significant whose style in Tournemire orchestral symphonies appear in batches, called him "the master of the arabesque ".
