Charles W. Cathcart

Charles William Cathcart ( born July 24, 1809 in Funchal, Portugal, † August 22 1888 in La Porte, Indiana ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, representing the state of Indiana in both chambers of Congress.

Charles Cathcart was born in Madeira, where his father served as consul of the United States. Later the family lived in Spain before 1819 was the return to the United States. Cathcart dried first at sea, before he in 1830 to Washington DC moved there and worked as a civil servant for the General Land Office. Finally, he settled down in 1833 in Indiana. He was justice of the peace in LaPorte County and worked in agriculture and as a surveyor.

1837 took over Charles Cathcart his first political office when he was elected to the Senate from Indiana, where he remained until 1840. A few years later he moved for the Democrats, a House of Representatives of the United States; that he belonged to between 4 March 1845 to 3 March 1849. Then took place on December 6, 1852, the appointment as U.S. senator as successor to the late James Whitcomb. Already on 18 January 1853 he retired again from the Senate. Another attempt to be elected to the House of Representatives, ran unsuccessfully in 1860.

Cathcart retired after from politics and was confined to his agricultural activity. In 1888, he died on his farm near La Porte.
