Charles W. Gates

Charles Winslow Gates ( born January 12, 1856 in Franklin, Franklin County, Vermont; † July 1, 1927 ) was an American politician and 1915-1917 Governor of the State of Vermont.

Early years and political rise

Charles Gates attended the common schools and St. Johnsbury Academy. After that, he worked both as a farmer and in the teaching profession as a teacher. He was President of the Franklin County Fair Association and a director of Enosburg Falls Savings Bank. In 1895 he founded the Franklin Telephone Company.

Gates was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1899 and 1900 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Vermont, and from 1901 to 1902 he was a member of the State Senate. After that, he was from 1904 to 1914 a member of the building committee Street ( Highway Commission ). In 1914 he was in his party as a candidate for the office of governor to overcome the torn in the presidential election of 1912 trenches within the party. At the time, the Republicans had split between supporters of ex-President Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft into two camps and thus the Democrat Woodrow Wilson makes the election.

Governor of Vermont

After his election victory, Charles Gates took up his new post on January 7, 1915. In his two-year tenure as governor, the area code in Vermont principle was extended to the midterm elections. Even the education system of the state was improved. The failure insurance for employees was revised. Gates declined to run again and therefore different on 4 January 1917 from his office.

Further CV

Previously he had applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate in the congressional elections of 1916. He had already failed in the preliminary round within his party. After the end of his governorship, he retired from politics. He spent his life in his hometown of Franklin, where he devoted himself to his private business. He is also passed away in July 1927. Governor Gates was married to Mary E. Hayden, with whom he had five children.
