Charles W. Lippitt

Charles Warren Lippitt ( born October 8, 1846 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † April 4, 1924 in Harmon, New York ) was an American politician and 1895-1897 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and political rise

Charles Lippitt was a son of Henry Lippitt, who had been 1875-1877 Governor of Rhode Iceland. Charles attended to 1865, the Brown University and later joined the wool processing plants his father. Like his father, Charles was also a member of the Republican Party. While the father's governorship was the younger Lippitt as its Chief of Staff managing official in his government. Between 1881 and 1883 Charles Lippitt was Chairman of the Trade Committee of Providence. In 1884 he became head of Providence Commercial Club and from 1891 to 1901, including during his governorship, he was on the board of the Rhode Iceland National Bank of Providence.

Governor of Rhode Iceland

In 1895, Charles Lippitt was elected governor of his state. After a re-election in 1896 he was able to exercise this office from 29 May 1895, 25 May 1897. Lippitt saw itself as representing the interests of industry. He sat down for protective tariffs and the granting of a license to trade in alcoholic beverages. The proposal to extend the terms of office of elected officials, including the governor, to two years, was at that time in Rhode Iceland no political majority. Married women were given the right to be allowed to enter into contracts independently.

After the end of his tenure, Lippitt dedicated his private business again and was active in numerous community and social organizations. Charles Lippitt died on 4 April 1924., With his wife Margaret Barbara Farnum he had six children.
