Charleston Battery

Charleston Battery is an American football team from Charleston, South Carolina. The club was founded in 1993 and plays in the USL Professional Division, the third highest league in American football.

Charleston is one of the most successful teams in the lower U.S. professional leagues. They won the USL A- League 2003, the USL Second Division in 2010 and the USL Professional Division, 2012.

Since 1999, the home games of the team are played in Blackbaud Stadium. This is on the Daniel Iceland in Charleston.

History

The club was founded in 1993 and played in the first years in the Premier Development Soccer League. In 1996, the Battery Master this league. The following season, the club known then under the name A -League USL First Division followed. 1999, the club reached the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Cup competition. 2004, the Battery repeat this. In the 2003 season, Charleston was able to win the championship of the A-League with a 3-0 final victory over Minnesota Thunder.

2008 Charleston Battery for the first time reached the final of the U.S. Open Cup, DC United had there but to admit defeat.

2010 won both the regular season, as well as the play-offs in the USL Second Division for the team.

Since the 2011 season, they play in the newly established USL Professional Division.

Colours and Coat of Arms

The colors of the Charleston Battery are yellow, black and red. On the crest of the team are two crossed artillery cannons. This goes back to the city's role in the American Civil War.

Stadium

The completed in 1999, Blackbaud Stadium is the home stadium of Battery. It is 16 km ² Daniel Iceland peninsula that is situated between the Cooper River and the Wando River. Owner of the football stadium is the city of Charleston, entertain but it is by the club itself The Battery Park, thus the nickname, summarizes 5,100 spectators. Namesake of the stadium is the Blackbaud Inc., a software company that has its headquarters next to the venue. The founder of this company, Tony Bakker, is the main share owner at Charleston Battery.

Rivals and fans

The club has an unusual rivalry with the Major League Soccer club DC United. Whenever both club meet, the clubs play the " Coffee Pot Cup". This competition was created by the fans of both clubs.

The official fan club of the Battery 's called "The Regiment".
