Charleston is located in Eastern Illinois on the west bank of the Embarras River. The geographical coordinates are 39 ° 29'19 " north latitude and 88 ° 10'44 " west longitude. The city covers an area of 23 km ². Charlesten lies mainly in Charleston Township, but also extends into the Hutton, Lafayette and Seven Hickory Township.
