Charley Grapewin

Charley Grapewin ( born December 20, 1869 in Xenia, Ohio; † February 2nd 1956 in Corona, California ) was an American actor.

Life

Charley Grapewin began his career as a trapeze artist and tightrope walker in the circus. Already in the 1880s he played in repertory theaters as an actor. His first film appearance in the year 1900. 1896 he had married his wife Anna Chance ( 1875-1943 ). The two remained to her death in 1943 a pair. Grapewin 1919 gave his acting and circus career, worked at General Motors and invested his money. After the stock market crash, the family lost their entire fortune and he returned to acting. In 1929 he directed his first feature film. He played from 1929 to 1951 in over 100 films character roles. His most famous role was the uncle Henry on the side of Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz
