Charlie Gaines

Charles " Charlie" Gaines ( born August 8, 1900 in Philadelphia, † 23 November 1986) was an American jazz trumpeter and bandleader.

Gaines played as a teenager in brass bands in his native city. In 1920 he moved to New York City, where he was a member of the orchestra of Wilbur Sweatman. After that he went to Clarence Williams and then played with Sam Wooding, Earl Walton, Leroy Smith, Fats Waller, Charlie " Fess " Johnson and Hot Chocolates. In the 1930s, Gaines headed in Philadelphia own group with which he occasionally records recorded as 1934 under the band name Lazy Levee Loungers with Clarence Williams. He then worked as an accompanist for Leroy Smith and also played in the Louis Armstrong orchestra. In the 1950s, he appeared again with his own bands in Philadelphia, mostly in the Jazz Club Carroll 's. In the 1960s, he had a trio with an exposure to the Hangover Club. In the 1970s, Gaines put to rest.
