Charlie Mariano

Charlie Mariano, a native Carmine Ugo Mariano ( born November 12, 1923 in Boston, Massachusetts, † 16 June 2009 in Cologne ) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, flautist and oboist ( Nagaswaram ). Charles Mingus called Mariano's lyrical tone on the alto saxophone as " Tears of Sound ", suffering and tears of joy as sound. Mariano was one of the first jazz musicians who played world music.

Life and work

Mariano was the third and youngest child of Italian immigrants from Abruzzo, his father, the chef Giovanni Mariano and his mother Mary Digirronimo Mariano. He was great with opera music, received as a child piano lessons and changed until the age of 17 to the saxophone. His idol was at this time the saxophonist Lester Young. Later Mariano was then impressed by way of playing and sound of Johnny Hodges; Mariano called him " his first important role model ."
