Charlotte Amalie is located on the south side of the island of Saint Thomas and is the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The city is the Episcopal Diocese of the Virgin Islands seat.

History

Charlotte Amalie was the capital of the Danish West Indies. In this city there was one of the first Jewish communities in the New World, which proves the second oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The city was named by the pirate Nicolaj Esmit in 1691 after Queen Charlotte Amalie ( 1650-1714 ), wife of King Christian V of Denmark. Previously, the settlement was called Fort Christian. During the South American wars of independence in 1804 Charlotte Amalie was declared a free port. In Charlotte Amalie died in 1810 Major General Casimir Wilhelm von Scholten, after the market square of the city is named.

In the city, the stadium Lionel Roberts Park, which is the home stadium of the football team of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The main attraction of the city is the Fort Christian, built in 1671 by the Danish King Christian V.
