Charlotte, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg

Charlotte of Nassau- Weilburg ( born January 23, 1896 Schlossberg, † July 9, 1985 at Schloss Fischbach ) was 1919-1964 Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, duchess of Nassau.

Life

Charlotte was the second eldest of the six daughters of Grand Duke William IV of Luxembourg (1852-1912) and Infanta Maria Anna of Portugal ( 1861-1942). After the abdication of her sister Marie -Adélaïde Charlotte followed her as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg on 15 January 1919. Referendum of the people September 28, 1919 confirmed the constitutional hereditary monarchy under Grand Duchess Charlotte.

On November 6, 1919, she married her cousin Prince Felix of Bourbon- Parma, the brother of Zita, the last Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, with whom she had six children: Jean, who was born on January 5, 1921 and their successor, Elizabeth (1922-2011), Marie -Adélaïde (* 1924), Marie -Gabrielle ( b. 1925 ), Charles ( * 1927) and Alix (* 1929).

After the occupation of Luxembourg on 10 May 1940 by German troops, the Grand Duchess and her family and the government on France, Portugal and the United States fled into exile in Canada and London.

From 1940 to 1944, the Grand Duchess was their radio talks on the BBC became a symbol of freedom and independence of their country.
