Charlotte Wolter

Elisabeth Charlotte Wolter ( born March 1, 1834 in Cologne, † June 14, 1897 in Hietzing / Vienna) was a celebrated actress. She was known for being always designed her own costumes, and her powerful mezzo- soprano voice (the " Wolter - cry " ) was loved by the audience.

Life

Charlotte Wolter was born as the daughter of the writer Heinrich Wolter and his wife Antonetta Wolter, born in the house Almstaedt Hämergasse 10 in Cologne. She began her career in Pest (now Budapest), then played in touring theaters and at the Carl Theatre in Vienna and received a 1859 engagement at the newly built Victoria Theater in Berlin, where she worked until 1861.

Her portrayal of Hermione in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale was great recognition, which also had a very successful stint at the Vienna Hofburg Theatre result. They had indeed now committed to three years at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg; but she succeeded after two years, to effect an amicable settlement of the contract, and the artist was already won in 1862 for the Burgtheater in Vienna, where she was celebrated in many roles as a tragic heroine.

Her repertoire included such as the Adrienne Lecouvreur, Racine's Phaedra, Mary Stuart, Orfina, Lady Milford in Schiller's Kabale und Liebe, Messalina, Friedrich Halm Begum Somru and Klara in Mary Magdalene.

Charlotte Wolter was married to the Count Karl O'Sullivan de Grass († 1888).

She was buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 32 A, number 20). After her request in costume of Iphigenia, her most successful role. 1898 named to the Wolter in Vienna - Hietzing after her.
