Charlottenburg Canal

The Charlottenburg connecting channel ( CVK ) is a federal waterway waterways of class IV in Berlin. It forms the border between the districts of Moabit ( new bank) and Charlottenburg ( Goslar bank). Responsible for managing the Water and Shipping Authority Berlin.

Location and History

The Charlottenburg connection channel is 1.6 kilometers long and runs from the western mouth of the Landwehr canal in the Spree river in the north to the confluence with the Westhafenkanal.

During the construction of Spandau navigation channel 1848-1859 had disregarded that a considerable part of the ship transport, particularly transport bricks from the upper Havel, the Landwehr Canal and the tilling to the southern areas had the goal. These ships now had to take five kilometers spree down the Landwehr Canal either the old way via Spandau through the still unregulated lower Spree or the path of the Humboldt Harbor. This created a direct link between the Spree attitude of Spandau navigation channel ( from 1914: Berlin- Spandau navigation canal ) near the sluice Plotzensee and the Landwehr Canal from 1872 to 1875, the 3.2 -kilometer Charlottenburg connection channel.

After the completion of the further north out west harbor channel in the year 1956 not needed for the Westhafenkanal parts of the north-eastern section of the north ring road have been filled in and built over the wholesale market Beusselstraße. The shortened now by half Charlottenburg connecting channel flows since a right angle directly in the West harbor channel.

The place of meeting of the Charlottenburg connection channel with the river Spree and the Landwehr canal is called " Spree cross."
