History

The stadium was inaugurated on 28 June 1930 with the game Servette Geneva against the Vienna-based organization First Vienna FC ( 0:7 ). It was the first game in the context of the Coupe des Nations in 1930, which took place at the inauguration of the new stadium in Geneva. The first international match of the Swiss national team in this stadium was held on May 24, 1931 against Scotland and was lost with 2:3.

1946 was an increase in spectator capacity of 14,000 to 30,000. On June 14, 1951 we recorded more than 40,000 admissions during the international match between Switzerland and France, synonymous with the attendance record. During the Football World Cup in 1954 four games were played in the then 35'997 seater stadium. The first game under the lights was held on 11 June 1956 it lost Servette 0-1 against the French champions OGC Nice. From 1983, all stands were covered, a year later there was the first considerations for a new building.

In January 1995, the league ordered due to disrepair at the closing of the Grandstand A, the subsequent renovation took a year. In the following years the stadium had to be adapted to UEFA standards (abolition of standing) and possessed from July 1998, only a capacity of 9'250 spectators. In July 2000, construction began on the new Stade de Genève in Lancy, the last game in the old stadium took place on 8 December 2002. The Stade des Charmilles was then nine years left to decay and finally canceled in mid-November 2011. By 2014, on the brownfield site a public park and residential arise.
