Charte d'Alaon

The Charter of Alaon is a maliciously forged document, should be assigned to the origin of the Duke Eudo of Aquitaine family († 735 ). It is dated January 30, 845 and bears the signature of King Charles the Bald. However, the French historian Joseph -François Rabanis demonstrated in the 19th century that the Charter only in the 17th century was made. His research debunked supposedly secure knowledge of the history of Gascony and the Kingdom of Navarre as meaningless.

To the otherwise blank assertions of the Charter the lineage of the Dukes of Aquitaine and Gascony heard of the Merovingian king Charibert II († 632). His son, Chilperic died shortly after his father, younger sons Chariberts, of which Odo should descend, are actually unknown. Similarly, the origin of Duke Lupus (I.) is unknown, and a relationship to Eudo or the Merovingians not provable.

From the house Jiménez, the Navarra ruled from the 10th to the 13th century, was also specified, it descended from lupus and one of his sons. Although a relationship between lupus and Jimeno, the eponymous ancestor of the house Jiménez, is likely to occur, but no relationship between him and the Spanish Basques is known. Fact can be conclusively proven that neither the Aquitanian were the Gascon dukes of Basque origin. Charles Higounet genealogies referred to this approach as " fantasy ". The historian Jules Villain even suggested a connection between the house Comminges and lupus ( II ). Indeed, of lupus ( II ) neither parents, nor known wives or children, this are only guesses ago

The historian Arthur Giry (1848-1899) writes: "Because of the claims of the house of Austria - Spain to the Crown of France must be the origin of one of the most famous forgeries of history, the Charter of Alaon reported. It is an alleged diploma of King Charles the Bald with date January 21 845, Urgel be confirmed in the gifts of a certain Wandregisel to the monastery Alaon in the diocese. This confirmation of excessive length contains a genealogy of the Counts Wandregisel, when it comes to elucidate the origin of the former kings of Aragon, to let them descended from the dukes and kings of Aquitaine, and to link with the Merovingians. This document should be reaffirmed 862-1041 nine times, but it seems that the ancient texts have neither the diploma nor its affirmations ever existed. A copy of it was left by the archivist and annalists Aragon, Dormer, the Cardinal Aguirre, as if it came from the archives of Seo de Urgels, which it in good faith. In his Collectio conciliorum Hispaniae ( Volume III, Rome, 1694, in -fol, p 151) recorded. It seems that this text had just been produced by the Spanish publicists Tamayo de Salazar, who was a famous impostor in his time already. Published sooner, the Charter of Alaon in France was accepted as one of the most valuable documents of our history, as it was overloaded with a plethora of apocryphal names, dates and facts. Dom Vaissète especially created on this basis an entire historical system. Benjamin Guérard takes the honor of being the first - it's been nearly sixty years old - this deception, to do justice to by some compelling arguments justice. However, these false texts have a tough life, especially since they are so interesting. Although the documents, evidence and arguments have been accumulated, many historians who would not come to the idea of defending the famous Charter, and even those that explain their inauthenticity, with the data and facts, which have been introduced by the Charter have, resigned. Shred the Charter of Alaon be found in many contemporary historical writings. Even if such documents are finally convicted, it is clear that the story will then retain something. "
